The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH has everything going for it--exuberant color, the sculptured style of Canon’s famed ELPH series--and the innovative know-how that takes you to a whole new level of picture-taking accomplishment. Fun, smart and a style that follows you everywhere.

PowerShot SD1200 IS Highlights

10.0-megapixel resolution makes it a breeze to print large size images
With the PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH, dramatic, personal pictures have never been easier to shoot and share. The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH is equipped with Canon’s acclaimed Optical Image Stabilizer Technology that automatically detects and corrects camera shake--one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots, even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you’ll be proud to shoot and share. .

Large, crisp 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II and wide viewing angle
The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH gives you a large 2.5-inch LCD screen for excellent control when framing your shots. Canon’s PureColor LCD II offers spectacular color, resolution and contrast even when viewed at an angle.

Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper settings
Just set the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH to Smart AUTO and you’re ready for maximum enjoyment from your picture taking every time. It’s a relaxing and satisfying way to shoot because you can completely concentrate on your subject knowing that the camera has the technical details covered. It automatically selects an appropriate setting from 18 specially defined settings. So whether you’re photographing flowers, a captivating sunset, or your friends at the park, you can be confident that you’re getting dramatic, memorable images.

Shooting Modes
Advanced presets for the best possible photos under certain conditions. With 17 Shooting Modes, you’re ready for whatever shot comes your way.

A World of Advantages with Canon’s Technology

The DIGIC 4 Image Processor has evolved Face Detection Technology that tracks the faces of moving subjects and lets the shooter enter the frame seamlessly with the Face Detection Self-Timer.

iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

A Face Detection Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. For instance, to include the photographer’s face in a group shot, there’s no need to rush in. Just put the camera on a stand or tripod, specify Face Detection Self-Timer, and the camera will wait for the photographer’s face to get on-camera before it takes the shot. Motion Detection tracks moving subjects in a much larger range--allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing.

Intelligent Contrast Correction
DIGIC 4 also makes possible the i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural transition. The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH can even use i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated.

Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures. 1) Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken. 2) The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback. 3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

Life doesn’t give you second chances to capture special times. That’s why the PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH features an ISO 1600 setting that reduces the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO can be expanded to 3200 when you select ISO 3200 Special Scene mode.

great little cam, some improvements from earlier powershots, some quirks5
The SD1200 has some big changes over its predecessor SD1100, and is the smallest, best designed Elph I've used thus far.

I've owned many models of Elph, this is my 6th or 7th, so my review is aimed especially at other serial Canon owners. I mostly compare the SD1200 to the SD1100.

* The big changes: Digic4 and a larger CCD sensor. The slight increase in CCD size (1/2.3" vs 1/2.5") should make for "cleaner" photos. And Digic4 promises faster/cleaner shots also.

* You get 10MP vs 8MP on the SD1100, and "medium" (M1) size is now 6MP. JPG quality is down to 2 setting: Fine or Normal.

* SD1200 is only slightly smaller than the SD1100, but feels notably smaller by virtue of curved edges and the LCD being flush with the body (no bump-out).

* The 1200 now feels as small as this design can shrink. Good news: my average-sized male hands can still comfortably hold it, barely not covering lens, flash, or resting on the LCD. But the round power-button is now almost too small to press if you had big fingers and no fingernails.

* 1200's new battery is a higher capacity 1000mAh (vs ~760mAh for SD1100). There's also a new charger (not compatible with the old batteries), a glossy white-colored model to blend into your wall.

* The buttons and menus are streamlined. There's now a button for review mode, pressing it a 2nd time takes you back to the previous state. Handy. The slider has dedicated AUTO and Manual settings, no longer need to use menus for that switch.

* Continuous mode and ISO now are in the Function Menu (on the SD1100, they had dedicated buttons).

* A SD card is no longer included. This makes sense to me, a 32MB card is barely useful, and with the downward pressure on electronics prices, I can't imagine Canon wanting to bundle a more expensive/bigger card. Some people will find this lack annoying.

* The A/V output is gone, and the USB connector now serves both purposes (both kinds of included cables now have a USB-end)

* A new version of Canon software is required for this model, Zoombrowser 6.3. Canon typically requires a new release for each new family/season of cameras. Unfortunately, the CameraWindow software has been intentionally dumbed-down in the 6.x software and no longer offers the options to delete your photos (have to go through the OS), nor to chose custom naming for the downloads. I say intentionally, since I asked Canon customer-support about it and they stated the changes were not bugs. The last Canon software to still have that functionality was 5.x, corresponding to the SD1000 and other cameras released that season.

* In casual indoor tests, the 1200 seemed more ready to go to ISO400 (often too "noisy" to be useful) when the SD1100 would have chosen ISO200.

* The SD1200 and SD1100 have identical specs on their optics. However, I noticed a more pronounced barrel-distortion on the 1200 at extreme wide-angle. (still only noticable in close-up shots of straight-edged items at wide-angle)

* In a casual speed test, the SD1200 took/stored photos notably faster the SD1100 (same scene, continuous-mode, same brand SD card), despite the 1200's image size being larger.

* Canon's paper manuals have been shrinking steadily. With this model, the only manual included is a quick-start guide, the rest is on CD-ROM.

* The packaging is even more efficient than before, about half the size of the SD1100's box.

* Sadly, there is no HD video mode, although all of the other Elphs released this spring had HD. SD1200 owners are stuck with 640x480 video.

Canon has several sub-series within the compact Elph line, varying mostly by asthetics and optics. The SD1200 is successor to the series that included the SD1100, SD1000, and SD600. These all favor a classic, slim design. If you're unfamiliar with Canon's Powershot cameras, there's lots of good material out there on camera sites such as dpreview.

Professional photographers review4
I'm a professional photographer. I got tired of dragging my D3,D200 or other large cameras around, and worrying about it getting damaged. I decided to buy a camera just for fun that could fit in my purse and I wouldn't have a heart attack if it broke. Well I didn't hold that high of expectations of the camera, but after getting it, I've had a lot of fun with it. Not the most amazing pictures come from it (I am used to very high quality pictures), but they are good enough shots of my family. It's easy to use, really easy to set, FAST, and good low light. You don't always need the flash. It's very small, and can fit easily in my purse (that are all quiet small purses actually). This is a perfect camera if you just want some fun shots that are clear, and you want an easy to use fast camera. This is NOT good for "professional" type shots (why do people write reviews of these cameras and get all down on them for not being professional grade cameras? They never claim to be!).

New EXPEED image processor
Ensures high-quality pictures with stunning color and sharpness. In addition, the high-contrast and anti-reflection coating on the screen assist in clear viewing, even in direct sunlight.

4-Way VR Image Stabilization

  • Nikon's Optical VR Image Stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake with elements built into the camera's lens. This produces clearer, sharper results in lower lighting or unsteady conditions.
  • Motion Detection automatically detects moving subjects and adjusts the shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for camera shake and subject movement.
  • High ISO 6400 Capability gives you sharper results when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. This creates new opportunities to take sharper, more natural-looking photos in lower light conditions. ISO 3200 and 6400 are available at full resolution.
  • Nikon's original Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically takes up to 10 shots while the shutter is pressed and then saves the sharpest image.
Scene Auto Selector
Automatically recognizes the scene in your picture and adjusts the camera setting. Just set the camera to the Scene Auto Selector and the camera changes the settings according to the scene you are photographing, automatically. Subject Tracking will track a moving subject to ensure sharp focus. The camera will automatically track your subject--even if they temporarily move out of the frame.

Nikon's Smart Portrait System
  • In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically fixes most instances of red-eye in the camera. You may never see red-eye again.
  • Face-Priority AF is Nikon's face-finding technology that automatically focuses on up to 12 faces in a group portrait.
  • Smile Mode automatically releases the shutter when your subject smiles. The camera will detect the subject's smile and automatically fire the shutter.
  • Blink Proof enables the camera to take two pictures when the subject smiles and saves the shot in which the subject’s eyes are open.
  • D-Lighting rescues dark or backlit images by improving brightness and detail where needed.

A Canon Killer, An incredible Camera5
Many years ago I did quite a bit of photography; and so I know what it takes to get a great photo. Unfortunately the digital cameras, particularly the small ones, have been hampered by slow ability to capture light, and thus get clear pictures in Low light without a flash, or get great shots at High Speeds. Also the digital camera's ability to distinguish between a strong backlight, faces, a variety of scenes, like bright sun, shade, cloudy days, indoor light, has been poor, but gradually getting better across the last 4 years. This Nikon S620, solves all of those problems. All of these situations are corrected in this camera automatically if you want to just point and shoot. It is a master of computer engineering. For several years now with most of the strong brands, you could get good pictures in all the above situations, by correcting for red eye, selecting special scenes, and using tripods in low light. What I wanted to see if, with this Nikon, IF you set it to complete auto, you could get great pictures. Has the computer advanced far enough, where it could anticipate all these situations and give you a great picture? Answer is a resounding yes. I have tested this for a month, and I love it so much; I have now bought one for one of my daughters. This model as some professional reviews have said is a bit more practical for everyday situations, because of the wide angle. What it lacks in the Zoom, though the S630 is tempting; it makes up in speed, to handle all the above situations well. The controls are easy to operate. The high Megapixel count let you crop photos closer and still have a great picture; like the one I uploaded with the bird nesting. The anti-shake /vibration works well; to give you almost always clear shots, in these difficult situations.
Tiny, powerful and fast.5
I purchased this S620 as a replacement for my aging and failing Coolpix S51. I was looking for something faster and smaller and this camera is definitely both of those things. It was a tough decision between this and the S630.. which has a slightly higher resolution and a 7x zoom, but I decided that the speed more than makes up for it.

The advertised .7 second startup time is pretty much right on... power button press to first image recorded is a little less than 2 seconds, and it can take 2 pictures in about 3 seconds in single mode. This varies a bit depending on light, subject and which extra features that you have on. The smile detector and blink proof are nifty toys, but I don't really care and I leave them off. It's true that it takes about 3 seconds to load up the zoom and other features, but if you just need to power up fast to catch an unexpected shot, then 2 seconds is all it takes.

The pictures it takes are very sharp and the colors are vibrant, and the macro works great down to less than 1". It takes pretty clear pictures in nearly pitch black, automatically adjusting to ISO 1600. I tried setting it to ISO 6400 to see what would happen but the resulting picture was mostly useless. It must be for high speed action rather than low light applications.

As for negatives, my biggest would be that the metering options are limited. The 2 choices are Matrix and Center Weighted, but the Center Weighted is all over the place. On my old S51 if you told it center, then it focused on whatever was in the center no matter what. The center weighting on the S620 tries to guess what you were aiming for somewhere near the center, and it's often not right.... so you have to keep trying until it figures out what you want. The other negative was already mentioned by another reviewer, and that's that Nikon uses a non-standard USB cable. I usually pull the card out to save battery power when I'm transferring pictures, but it's worth noting for other potential purchasers.

As a side note, I purchased this from J&R, and when it arrived it was the kit version, which included the Nikon 5811 leather case - so I'm glad I didn't spend the extra $18 on that... before you buy the case separately, check with the retailer to see if it's included.

Samsung TL 2205
I bought the Samsung TL 220 and just love it. It takes good and clear pictures. And has so many features that the other cameras don't have. I have not had any problems with my camera and would highly recommend this camera to all camera lovers. Only one little downfall, the battery goes quicker than other cameras but I assume that is because it is all touchscreen and would drain the battery quicker. Other than that I love it.

Awesome Features!5
This camera is awesome. I bought this for my daughter's 19th birthday a couple of weeks ago and she is still exploring all of it's numerous features. The touchscreen is wonderful and the quality of the pictures are amazing. I especially like the option to change the resolution of your pictures and the clear crisp quality of the pictures, also the lighting and color quality is that of a professional photographer's camera. The only glitch I can mention is with the child mode feature Samsung offers on their website files to download videos and that is a little confusing but other than that it's great. I do recommend however that you purchase this camera for a serious picture taker, I don't recommend this camera for a child or a very young teenager as it's many features may be overwhelming which may dissuade them from taking advantage of them.

In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. Anti-blink Function
It's frustrating to think you've captured that perfect shot, only to review it later and discover one of your subjects blinked just as you pressed the shutter. The new Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.

Smile Shutter Technology
The popular Smile Shutter technology automatically detects and captures a smiling face. Simply activate by pressing the Smile Shutter button and the camera will capture a smile the moment it happens. Various modes available in this function setting.

Double Anti-blur Solution
The combination of Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and High ISO sensitivity helps compensate for camera shake, minimizes blur, and allows flash-free shooting to preserve the mood.

High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200)
High ISO allows for faster shutter speed, so you can take photos indoors or in low light without the need for a flash. In addition to High Sensitivity Mode (ISO), you can select up to eight ISO settings (Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200) when shooting in Program Auto Mode to adjust sensitivity to your shooting conditions.

Red-eye Correction
Reduces common red-eye problems.

Photo modes include Auto, Program Auto, Easy Shooting, and Scene Selection such as Smile Shutter, High Sensitivity, Landscape, Soft Snap, Twilight Portrait, Twilight, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, Underwater and Gourmet Mode.

Burst Mode
You can fire up to 100 shots at approximately 0.57 second intervals (at any resolution; VGA to high resolution mode. Results may vary based on settings and Memory Stick media being used).

Let me take a moment to gush over my T905
I've had this camera since Tuesday and it's Friday and I'm still amazed. I've spent hours trying to learn my way around the menu, taking pictures, recording videos. I previously owned the Sony W150, but I upgraded for something much smaller. I've used the Panasonic Lumix and I've tried different Canon cameras, but the T90 takes the cake. This camera is sleek! The black casing is sexy :). I've tried all the Rec modes, except landscape. I still need to try the 6 scene selection modes. Overall, The photos are beautiful. The intelligent scene recognition mode is truly amazing. I tried to simulate several scenes in my living room/ kitchen with the windows open or closed, lights on or off. The camera was able to clearly identify the scene, backlight, or even when I simply desired to take a macro shot of my fingers to see all the wrinkles(unbelievable what scene recognition does)! As of now, I am happy and I have no regrets with my purchase. The battery does not last as long as my Sony W150, but it's good enough. I also picked up the Sony infolithium battery on here for like $38 (bought it through Amazon for peace of mind). I also purchased the 8gb MS Pro Duo Mark2 through Amazon for $44. Best Buy is selling the 8gb Mark 2 for $39.99 on sale right now until 5/2 (I wish I purchased it through BB, but it's only five dollars so whatever). I also purchased my camera through Best Buy for $299.99 plus tax (If only I would have checked Amazon's pricing before buying). Well despite all of that, the camera is absolutely wonderful. The honeymoon phase is going great and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. Hopefully, months from now I'm still happy with this camera.

Amazing!5
This camera is amazing!! It's so small and thing, so easy to use as well. it's not complicated with all these buttons and what makes it easier is that this camera has automatic shooting...where if u went outside, it'd automatically go to "landscape" mode or to where ur taking a picture of one person only, it'd change to "portrait". I love it! It's easy to also switch to several megapixel sizes so you can load pictures easier on computer and the quality is the same no matter what the size is! Beautiful pictures and works beautifully without flash for video and pictures at night time. Colors are captured amazingly. Best camera Ive ever gotten. You wont be disappointed.

Very cool camera4
The pictures from this camera are very clear, and the touch screen is a nice feature. The one thing I would recommend is that you buy memory, as the internal memory in the camera is extremely low.The high resolution of the pictures take up a lot of space. This camera is very tiny so I could see how some people complained about the touch screen but I have normal sized fingers and got the hang of it quickly. The camera is slightly larger than a Motorola razor, is very thin and ultra portable, but it seems that a drop could demolish it. But all things aside I am very pleased with it. if you are looking for something that can take abuse try the Olympus stylus tough 8000 I hear that it can take abuse like a UFC fighter. The Sony how ever has excellent picture quality, and is very easy to use and carry around. I gave it four stars because it does not seem like it could survive abuse, so I would not recommend this for a child. But if you would like a cool high resolution camera with a good lens and lots of little practical design features for under 300 dollars this is great.

Looking to buy a camera?
Not sure which camera meets your needs?
Let me help. I can review photographic products and provide recommendations for you, so you can purchase the exact camera to meet your photographic needs.

Below is the first of my monthly reviews.

Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera:
This low range digital SLR is ideal for the low end/amateur user. This camera features Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System, Live View Function couples with a 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor for stunning photographs. This SLR is close to the compact point and shoot cameras, whilst providing the flexibility for the more adventurous to manage the various aspects of more advanced photography such as aperture and shutter speed. Coupled with preset picture modes for landscapes, sport, portrait and sports this is an ideal digital SLR for those looking at upgrading from the point and shoot compact digital cameras or the enthusiast looking to explore more creative photographic fields.

With its ergonomic design the EOS Rebel XSI is easy to use and comes with a 3.0-inch LCD monitor and it is compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards and various new accessories in order to enhance all aspects of your photographic experience.

Nikon D90 DX 12.3 MP Digital SLR Camera:
Nikon's first venture into incorporating the SLR digital camera and HD Movie vidoe. Still maintaining Nikon's high quality in mid range digital SLRs the D90 is ideal for basic sports photography with 4.5 fps providing the power to capture fast action and precise moments perfectly, with the Scene Recognition System allowing faster auto focusing.

The D90 delivers enough features to keep the passionate photographer happy with numerous exposure functions, 3D Color Matrix Metering, Live View through the new 3-inch LCD monitor (a big improvement on the D70 - especially for those of us requiring glasses to view the scene in the smaller monitor) The HD Movie mode produces cinematic quality video at 24 fps basically eliminating the need for a separate video camera for the amateur and semi professional photographer.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC 10.1 MP Digital camera with 10X optical Zoom and Image Stabilization:
A full featured point and shoot with a fast shutter speed and excellent high powered zoom capacity. This enables the elimination of delayed picture capture experienced by a lot of earlier digital point and shoot cameras, Sony have called this capacity their 'Smile Shutter technology'. This smart little camera comes with features such as: face detection for optimize focus and color; Scene recognition and Sony's Anti Blur technology.
The DSC comes with a generous 3-inch LCD display monitor for easy viewing of your images and menu options. Sold with all the necessary accessories required to get you started. An excellent point and shoot option for your teenagers or to carry in your purse to capture those fleeting moments as you can always be prepared with the Sony DSC.
